I found a picture of you, oh-oh
Well, it hijacked my world at night
To a place in the past we've been cast out of, oh-oh
No greater description of doomscrolling through an ex’s social media than Chrissie Hynde singing about looking at a photo of ex Ray Davies in 1982*. She absolutely nails the quiet resigned horror of getting deep into a late-night Facebook / Flickr / Instagram hole, 25 years before the doomscroll became a reality. But the feeling? Mostly the same. The technology changes, the psychology doesn’t.
That specific example of Chrissie Hynde’s prophetic lyrics is not in the show, but it’s the kind of thing I’ve been thinking about when editing and rehearsing** Doomscrolling, which returns to the stage this week, after a few months’ break. To be clear, I’ll be making it return by performing it, the show’s not become sentient.
Doomscrolling is on at Camden Comedy Club at 6:30pm on Thurs 24th and Sat 26th August. I’ve got a reviewer in on the Thurs, so of course ticket sales are low (it’s not long after work ends, so a good time for a critic to come down, a tricky time for general audiences to get there).
If you’re thinking of coming along, there’s a discount code for the Thursday: TWITTER. Please join us then so I don’t actually make sustained eye contact throughout with the reviewer…
Here’s some nice press about Doomscrolling;
- BBC Radio London (2h 38m in)
I’m also hosting the Best of Camden Fringe nights throughout the festival, there’s one tonight, come! They’ve been really fun. MC’ing is a hoot isn’t it?

**okay, so I’ve not started rehearsing yet
Linkys
- How satisfying are these grid movie posters?
- Just when I’d printed out my final Doomscrolling script for the month, the best of all headlines pops up:
- I’m eyeing up tickets for Two Hearts at Soho Theatre next week. I saw their last show twice at Ed Fringe 2022, they’re that good!
- I’ve already got a ticket for Ben Target’s Ed Fringe 2023 hit, Lorenzo, when it comes to Soho at the end of September. His Edinburgh run sold out fast, so get a Soho ticket quick I reckon.
That’s all from me, thanks for reading and bye for now! x
